Conti plays a pro level (more challenging than the Ticket To Improv series) solo over the chord changes to an in-demand jazz tune. Then, in his straight-forward approach, he teaches you to duplicate the entire solo, close-up, measure-by-measure, note-by-note. As documented by scores students in written testimonials, and their performance videos, you learn to play jazz, by playing jazz, not talking about modes or scales.
You must get the idea out of your head that you’re “just learning someone else’s solo.” When a child learns to speak, he/she emulates words that they have heard before. No one says to the child, “you’re just learning someone else’s words.” The child learns a word, then another word. The pattern continues until the child can speak in complete sentences (and without knowing the “theory” behind language.) As you develop your jazz vocabulary, you’ll soon reshape the ideas for applications over other tunes. These DVDs are for you if you’ve got serious chops, but don’t know what to do with them. If you practice modes and scales all the time, that’s what your solos will sound like – boring and uninteresting to say the least. Learn hip jazz lines, and have lots of fun doing it.

I have quite a few Conti courses and I think he is a great nuts-and-bolts teacher, especially be-bop soloing. I haven't found anyone who offers so many chord substitutions. He shows how to play a tune that has maybe 6 - 8 chords and use maybe 40 - 50 choices. Mind boggling at first but when you figure him out, he's WOW!

Loving the Big City Blues Volume 4!! It seems like you are making things that always seemed sooooo hard to grasp,... within my reach. Without all the worry about theory etc. I can focus on the lines,.. the music,... I'm getting this. And,.. as I do it, as I learn the line,... the reason comes to me! I can see the reason under my fingers. Amazing, that I'm having breakthroughs at age 50 that I should have had at 18!!
Robert Conti is a true jazz master at both playing and teaching. TrueFire has done an amazing job at giving us an opportunity to sit down with a living legend and learn directly from him. He performs solos for Satin Doll, All Blues, and Wave. He then teaches you how to play each solo a couple of measures at a time. Learning to play these solos in his style in bite-size lessons is awesome. He flavors the lessons by sharing his experiences, some theory, and insights into his approach to make sure you get everything you need out of the lesson material. This course is a treasure chest of jazz gems and well worth the price of admission.
